Every year, France hosts the Challenge International de Paris (CIP), a foil Grand Prix event. fencing pictures has covered the event since 2004! See our past coverage.

This is the first Grand Prix of the 2012 London Olympics competition cycle. It is also the introduction of the new foil mask which increases target area: the bib is now part of the target!

This prestigious  and hotly contested tournament frequently features finalists like Sanzo of Italy (who won in 2004), and Le Pechoux of France (he never won, but is in the 2005 final). These fencing titans dominate the field, and it takes extreme talent to knock them out of a competition.

This year, however, we saw tremendous performances from American fencers Getz and Massialas, as well as Kruse of Great Britain. Perhaps we are seeing a  shake-up in the fencing world. Perhaps the old guard is changing.

Tremendous Upset

Almost as we walked in the door, we came across Getz USA vs Sanzo ITA fencing the round of 64. If you have any other fencing pictures DVD with men's foil, then you will have seen one of Sanzo's performances. World Champion and numerous World Cup winner, he is an unstoppable mix of experience and skill, using tempo to open up his opponents, and patience to whittle them down. fencing pictures captured the whole 18 minute bout, as Getz created amazing actions and Sanzo disbelievingly watched the bout spin out of control.

We also captured the final touches as young Alex Massialas, son of American fencing legend and fencing master Greg Massialas, beat Belorussia's Lyshkovski in the 64.

Amazingly, Getz and Massialas met in the round of 32, and we put he last touches of that bout on the DVD as a bonus.

Rule Brittania

Another exciting moment -- we have Great Britain's Richard Kruse (picture) coming on strong. He won the previous world cup. His style is very different from the classical schools. This DVD features his 24 minute bout against France's powerhouse Le Pechoux, and then his 22 minute bout against Huang of China. He finally joins past world champion Peter Joppich GER in the final bout.
